This movie was sharply divergent from the book on which it was based. (The title of the book will not be included here so as to protect all innocent or in any way connect it to this poor portrayal). Artistic license was allowed to run amok, literally weakening the true account. Poor acting and a trite script didn't help its cause either.
In no way was Cathy Lee's character of teacher "Maggie" reflective of her real life counterpart. "Maggie's" teaching methods and the things she said and did were far removed from anything her real life counterpart would ever have done. Maggie was also much older than her real counterpart at the time this story took place. That also threw in more fictionalized accounts.
Short version - Caitlin Eldridge was remanded to a hospital after injuring another child. During the interim, she was placed in a special needs class where her IQ of 168 was "discovered." Setbacks involved sexual molestation. Maggie was obsessed with getting her class included in auditorium activities. The worst part of this movie was when Maggie cuts Caitlin off at a critical point in the child's disclosure of sexual abuse to hustle her off to that darn auditorium. Meanwhile, John Getz is the injured boyfriend, crying in his beer about being given the back burner treatment by Maggie. His whines become tiresome, like this movie.
Maudlin ending with the "Teacher Maggie" character saying how only she could be that bridge for Caitlin. Oh, brother!

Short version of a TV-Miniseries, German only

This is a strange product if I ever saw one. "World War III" was a good cold-war TV-Miniseries, released on 1982. Many people who saw it in the 1980s still remember it, which speaks for its high impact (the dramatic ending, by no means a happy one, is just wonderful). Tragically, director Boris Sagal was killed by a helicopter blade in a freak accident while filming it. The project was completed by director David Greene, but most of the filming was (unsurprisingly) moved indoors, and actually one can tell which scenes are on natural scenarios and which ones are indoor recreations.

Somewhere in Germany, someone came to the idea of cutting down the original 186 minutes TV-miniseries down to an 81-minutes "film". This DVD is a German product and has only a German soundtrack. After losing more than half of the original footage, it is no wonder that the plot seems a bit loose at some points. On the other hand, it is virtually impossible to get the original miniseries, because it has never been released as a DVD (you can still get a VHS at an outrageous price). Actually, this "film" does not exist in other languages, so this DVD is the only chance to get a hold on part of the mini-series. Worth it for fans of cold-war movies and/or Rock Hudson, an absolute must for collectors of Boris Sagal films, but probably will not work for most viewers. It's not the film's fault, really, you are just seeing less than half of it.

Note: there are two versions of this DVD, with wildly differing prices: World War 3 - Vision des Schreckens and Weltkrieg 3. Check before buying.

Ich habe mir diesen Film wegen Rock Hudson und David Soul gekauft, bin vom Film allerdings doch sehr enttäuscht. Die Handlung ist doch sehr seicht und bis auf ein paar Schiessereien nicht gerade Spannend. Das Thema haben andere Filme wesentlich besser umgesetzt. Zudem kommen doch öfters Wiedersprüche auf. Die Umsetzung auf DVD ist auch nicht gerade als gelungen zu bezeichnen, denn das Bild ist doch sehr unscharf. Da wäre bei einem Film diesen alters mehr drin gewesen.Der Ton in DD 2.O ist in Ordnung. Als Extras, wenn man es so bezeichnen kann, gibt es eine Filmografie von Rock Hudson und David Soul, sowie eine Photo-Galerie zum Film. Deshalb nur 2Sterne für einen Film, den man nicht gesehen haben muß.
